  5.     A trainee engineer making his first passenger run was at the
  6. controls of the Amtrak Night Owl as it approached Boston's Back
  7. Bay Station at the morning rush hour. Tripping signals about
  8. a mile from a curve, the train, carrying roughly 200 people,
  9. was moving at 91.8 m.p.h. When the overnighter from Washington
  10. reached the curve, it should have slowed down to 30 m.p.h. The
  11. trainee, Richard Abramson, 41, told investigators that he hit
  12. the brakes three times before the curve, but they failed to
  13. slow the 120-ton locomotive. Willis Copeland, a veteran
  14. engineer supervising Abramson, tried the emergency brakes. Too
  15. late.

  17.     Six cars, including two engines, jumped the tracks at the
  18. curve only 500 ft. from the underground station. They slammed
  19. into a commuter train packed with 900 people on an adjacent
  20. track. Fuel ignited, and smoke choked trapped passengers in the
  21. darkness. At least 280 passengers were hurt.
